Open Day at the greenhouse facilities of the University of Thessaly


The Open Day was successfully completed, at the greenhouse facilities of the University of Thessaly, in Velestino, Volos.

Farmers, agronomists, researchers, academics and practitioners of the primary sector expressed interest, who visited the farm of the University of Thessaly in Velestino and got acquainted with the new techniques which are applied in greenhouses regarding the management, as well as recycling and circular economy.

Throughout the event, the guests were presented with the new modern greenhouse complex of the Department of Crop Production and Rural Environment of the University of Thessaly, which is equipped with state-of-the-art systems and is a leading pilot greenhouse in Europe.

New technologies focus on hydroponics and on a complete recycling/management of the nutrient solution, testing of different crop substrates, testing of new insect-proof screens, testing of new greenhouse covering materials, aquaponics (combination of aquaculture and hydroponics) and microalgae production originating from biofuel residues.

For many years, Thrace Group has aided and supported educational institutes in conducting research, providing high-quality agricultural fabrics such as groundcovers, shading nets etc. More specifically, the pilot greenhouses, located in Velestino, are equipped with Thrace NG white flame-retardant groundcover fabric and white nets with a shading factor of 40%.
